If you are not yet concerned about what plastic is doing to our planet and to our bodies, you should be afraid. You should be very afraid.
While on vacation this summer, I read this New York Times article about Potomac bass transforming into "intersex fish." According to this article, more than 80% of the male smallmouth bass in the Potomac are producing eggs. That's right. MALE FISH PRODUCING EGGS. Further, I learned that these genital abnormalities are appearing in increasing numbers in human fetuses (mostly male) as well.
The culprit? Endocrine disrupters. BPA is one such chemical found in plastic bottles and plates, among other things. Endocrine disrupters can also be found in a number of other places including metal food cans (like ones containing formula), detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides.
Upon reading that Times article, which was definitely not the first I'd heard of this issue, I vowed right then and there to REALLY (not just partly) give up plastic in every area possible. Particularly when it involved, oh I don't know, the possibility of putting those nasty chemicals INTO MY CHILDREN?
I ordered these stylish and practical Kidishes from The Soft Landing. Durable and safe. 100% recyclable. Made in France from tempered glass which does not shatter when you drop it. Not only are they safe, but they are also one heck of a lot more attractive then some of the dishes my kids have been eating off of that don't stack, look hideous and seem to multiply like Gremlins.
To test these "kid-friendly" plates MADE OUT OF GLASS, I bit my lip and dropped one of the sparkling new bowls on our hardwood floor. Nothing. (Except an ear-piercing clatter I don't really need to hear again.)
But don't take it from me. See it for yourself.
